Simon Cowell brands late singer a 'truly great guy' as he leads tributes
AMERICAN Idol finalist Michael Johns has tragically passed away aged 35.
The singer - who rose to fame in the 2008 series - died on Friday of a suspected blood clot after twisting his ankle.
Michael saw a doctor on Thursday as he was complaining of a pain in his ankle but he was given the all-clear and ordered to go home, TMZ reports.
The following afternoon his body was found on a couch unresponsive at a friend's house.
"Our family is devastated by the passing of our beloved Michael, a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle and friend," the Australian's family said in a statement.
Simon Cowell led the tributes to Michael and sang his praises in paying his respects.
"I just heard the very sad news that Michael Johns has passed away. A truly great guy. Rest in peace Michael," the dad-of-one wrote on Twitter.
"I'm heartbroken over the loss of @michael_johns. His enormous talent, gigantic heart and infectious personality will live in my heart forever," Paula Abdul added.
